Lettuce grows effortlessly up here. The only very minor problems have come from the curly-leafed varieties, which is fine, since I don't like them. The romaine and head lettuces do wonderfully. Like all the leafy greens in these parts, you have to harvest them at the right time or else the plant will start to bolt, but that processtakes place in a leisurely way in lettuce, so we can generally space out the harvest over the season and enjoy lettuce for most of the summer.

Summer 2011

We grew a row of Barbados, once during the spring, the other during the late summer, and both came out very well. The Red Iceburg from Seed Savers was spectacular, at least until the day that the moose came through and ate them, probably in one big bite. It was so sad. We'll try more next year, and protect the beds from the moose.
